Moodle Knowledge Base - Course management

How to add and manage sections for your course?

The section block displays the resources and activities of a section as a block. The sections can be renamed and set availability to students. Depending on the Course Format, the names of course sections are referred to as Topics (in Topic format) or Weeks (in Weekly format).

Steps to add sections:

  1. Turn on editing for the course.

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and, below the last section, click + Add topics (at right) and the pop-up will appear.

  3. Enter the number of sections you want to add into your course and click Add topics to save.

  4. Change the name of the topic if necessary.

Steps to change the course format:

  1. Turn on editing for the course.

  2. Click Options at the bottom left of the page and choose Edit settings in the popup.

  3. Scroll down and expand the Course format.

  4. Select the format to determine the layout of your course.

Steps to hide a topic:

The teacher role can hide a section from students.

  1. Turn on editing for the course.

  2. Click Edit (at right of the Topic).

  3. Select Hide topic.

Note: In the instructor's view of a hidden section, the content will always be displayed (dimmed) rather than hidden entirely, regardless of the settings chosen in the Edit course settings page. For hidden sections, below the Section name instructors will see "Hidden from students". Student role will see "Not available" below the section name.
