Teaching & Supervising Junior Learners in Virtual Patient Care (VPC) Settings

This MacPFD event will be focusing on teaching & supervision of junior learners in Virtual Patient Care (VPC) settings. We have previously featured events that speak to the needs of senior trainees (e.g. residents, fellows), but this session will aim to highlight some key faculty development content for those who are hosting junior trainees (pre-graduate trainees in MD, PA, NP, OT, PT, SLP, RN programs) in the VPC setting.

Moderator

Dr. Jill Rudkowski is an Associate Professor in the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Critical Care, Department of Medicine at McMaster University.  She is the Chair of Clerkship and CIR and the Director of Student Advising for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.  She is keen to lead and support educational innovation especially around clinical teaching and curriculum delivery.

Part 1: An Overview of the Literature

Dr. Keyna Bracken 

Dr. Bracken (@keentoride) is an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University. She is the Undergraduate and Clerkship Director for Family Medicine, and the Director Longitudinal Clerkship Experiences in the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. She is very interested in optimizing learning environments in medical education and is currently conducting research and scholarship in this area. 

Part 2: Teaching History

Becky McArthur & Dr. Heather Waters

Becky McArthur (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) is a speech-language pathologist and the owner of We Communicate, a private practice. Amidst the pandemic, she pivoted from in-home private services in Norfolk County to telepractice services across Ontario. Her practice focuses on evidence-based practices and strong family-clinician relationships. 
Dr. Heather Waters (@heatherwatersmd) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University.  She is the Hamilton Site Director for Postgraduate Family Medicine and the Chair of the PGME Education Advisory Board.  

Part 3: Clinical Skills & Teaching Tips

Dr. Maria Tiboni

Dr. Maria Tiboni (@maria_mtiboni) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University. She is the Director of the Metabolic and Bariatric Medicine Fellowship at McMaster University.  She has embraced Telehealth and has been providing patient care and education to learners virtually since prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr Tiboni is a certified Telehealth facilitator.  Her  areas of interest include metabolic medicine, resident and student education. She is also active in research collaborating with the Perioperative Research Group at PHRI. 


Part 4: Teaching & Supervision hints

Dr. David Fahmy

Dr. David Fahmy (@dfahmymd) is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Clinical Immunology & Allergy Division at McMaster University. There, he serves as the Education Coordinator for the training program including the CBME lead and Competence Committee chair. He recently completed his MSc in Health Sciences Education at McMaster University where he focused on adaptations and application of CBME in smaller programs.Â
